When to Book
Signs Your Pet May Need an Abdominal Scan
These symptoms are often investigated with blood tests first — but many internal conditions only become visible with ultrasound imaging.
Vomiting or nausea that doesn’t resolve
Persistent vomiting — especially when blood tests are inconclusive — often points to a structural issue that only imaging can reveal.
Chronic diarrhoea or digestive problems
When diarrhoea lasts beyond a few days or keeps recurring, intestinal wall changes and organ involvement need to be assessed directly.
Unexplained weight loss
Weight loss with a good appetite, or without an obvious cause, can indicate organ disease, masses or metabolic conditions requiring imaging.
Swollen or distended abdomen
Abdominal enlargement can indicate fluid accumulation, organ enlargement or masses. Ultrasound identifies the cause rapidly and safely.
Increased thirst or urination
Changes in drinking and urination habits are common signs of kidney, bladder or hormonal conditions — all assessable with ultrasound.
Abdominal pain or discomfort
A pet that flinches when touched in the belly area, walks hunched or avoids lying down may have an internal problem that needs imaging.
Abnormal blood test results
Elevated liver or kidney markers, or abnormal cell counts, often require ultrasound to identify the structural cause behind the numbers.
Annual wellness screening
For healthy senior pets, annual abdominal imaging detects conditions early — before they become symptomatic and harder to manage.

A small area of fur is gently clipped and ultrasound gel applied. Most pets lie comfortably on their side.

Need a Cardiac Ultrasound? That’s a Separate Examination
Heart ultrasound (echocardiography) is performed exclusively as part of our Full Cardiology Examination — which also includes ECG, blood pressure and cardiac blood markers. If your vet has recommended a cardiac scan, or your pet has a known murmur, please book the cardiology appointment directly. Both abdominal and cardiac imaging are available at Best Pet Vet without any referral.

Abdominal ultrasound at Best Pet Vet evaluates the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, pancreas, intestines and surrounding lymph nodes. It can detect fluid accumulation, masses, organ enlargement, inflammation, stones and structural abnormalities — in real time, during the appointment itself.
For abdominal ultrasound, fasting for 6–8 hours beforehand improves image quality significantly. Food and gas in the digestive system can obscure internal structures and reduce diagnostic accuracy. Our team will advise you on exact preparation when you book.
Yes, completely. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves — there is no radiation involved whatsoever. The procedure is non-invasive, painless and well-tolerated by most pets without sedation.
Ultrasound findings are available in real time — during the scan itself. Your senior veterinarian assesses the images immediately and discusses findings with you before you leave. If blood work is also needed, in-house results are available in under 15 minutes.
In most cases, no. The majority of pets lie comfortably on their side for the duration of the scan. If a pet is very stressed or the area being examined requires stillness that cannot be achieved with gentle handling, mild sedation may be recommended — but this is the exception, not the rule.

Cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) focuses specifically on the heart and is performed as part of our dedicated full cardiology examination — which also includes ECG, blood pressure and cardiac blood markers.
