A dog eating normally may still have significant pain from tartar pressing on the gums or an infected root. Over 70% of pets over three years old have some degree of dental disease. Early treatment is far simpler, less invasive and less expensive than treating advanced cases.

Yes, always. Any veterinary dental cleaning that properly removes tartar from below the gumline — where periodontal disease starts — must be performed under general anaesthesia. Without it, the procedure is incomplete and potentially harmful. At Best Pet Vet, we run a full pre-anaesthetic blood panel using our in-house laboratory (results in under 15 minutes) before proceeding. Continuous anaesthesia monitoring is maintained throughout.

Our in-house laboratory checks CBC (complete blood count), biochemistry up to 24 parameters, and cardiac markers — specifically to confirm your pet’s kidneys, liver and heart are healthy enough for anaesthesia. If there is any concern, we address it before proceeding. This is standard international veterinary protocol and something we do not skip.

Two reasons. First, we check cardiac health through our in-house lab before any anaesthesia. Second — and this is important — dental bacteria can enter the bloodstream and directly affect the heart. As one of the few clinics in Abu Dhabi with dedicated cardiology and ultrasound, we can assess heart health as part of the same visit. This level of integrated care is rare in the region.

They are not the same thing. Grooming tooth cleaning polishes the visible surface of the teeth — it cannot remove tartar from below the gumline, which is where periodontal disease originates. Veterinary dental scaling, performed under general anaesthesia, reaches the subgingival area where disease begins. Only professional veterinary scaling prevents and treats dental disease.

Age alone is not a contraindication for dental procedures. What matters is the overall health of the animal, and specifically kidney, liver and heart function. In most cases, yes. Persistent bad breath in pets is not “just how they smell” — it almost always indicates plaque, tartar, gum infection or deeper dental disease.
